In November 1990 a stone plate was found in the valley of the river Maritza nearby the village of Vetren. An ancient Greek inscription, beginning with the words 'I … swear Dionysus ...', was written on it. Archaeologists found out this was the trade law of that time ( between the 4th and 2nd century b.c. ), which was valid in the territory of the Pistiros trade zone. This is an unique document from the Thracians . king Kotis I. By then archaeological evidences for trade zones were usually found on the coast. What is unique here is that n this case there was only one continental trade zone and it was established on the left bank of the river Maritza nearby the town of Septemvri. The reason for this was that the climate there was excellent for growing vines for wine.
Nowadays the wine tradition is kept by 'Sinhron Invest'. Their the newly made vineyards are used for the group of wines Maritza Valley.
In the excavations scientists found more evidences that in the past in Maritza valley vines were grown and a wonderful wine was made. It was heavy and with excellent taste. This was proved by the remains of amphora, which was used for carrying wine to far lands.
A figure of the God Dionysus was also found in Maritza valley. This is a proof not only for the advanced wine production but also for the Holidays of Wine and Arts. A legend tells that Dionysus was the God of fertility, wine and vine-growing, music and dramatic poetry.
The legend also tells that Dionysus seduced the ancient virgin Erigona reincarnated in a vine. W
